Back From The Re:create Cruise

O.K., I’ve been gone a while. I admit it. Let’s call it a sabbatical, even though it didn’t start out that way.

My absence turned out to be exactly thirty days, which is a nice round number, although that too was unintentional.

Where have I been? I was working 12 hour days at the office, working on a book idea in the evenings, and then went on the Re:create Cruise hosted by Randy Elrod.

The wife and I are veteran cruisers.  We have cruised the Mediterranean, Baltic, Black Sea, as well as the Rhine and Danube rivers, but this cruise was different.  We were part of a group of Christian writers and artists on a conference cruise devoted to the creative process.

The cruise featured speakers Michael Hyatt, Randy ElrodPete Wilson and Ken Davis.

Michael Hyatt is the Chairman of the Board of Thomas Nelson Publishers, the largest Christian publisher in the world. He is a man with gravitas and real wisdom, not the faux mystic, sound-of-one-hand-clapping crap you get from worldly mystics.

Pete Wilson is a Nashville pastor and writer. On the cruise he preached an incredible message from his book, Plan B, which I’m reviewing here tomorrow.

Ken Davis was funny and profound at the same time.  His message of living life fully alive in Christ would have been inspiring as a serious stand-alone preach on any Sunday morning, but when combined with his humor and perfect comedic timing it became something unique, a message engaging in a way I’ve not experienced before.  If you ever get the chance to see him live, take it.

Randy Elrod was a gracious host, who made an effort to meet everyone in our cruise group (95 people).  He is a Renaissance man in an age of specialization, and he is pouring his life into Christian creatives.  I will continue to follow him on his blog and on twitter at @RandyElrod.

We also met some great creative Christians, whose blogs and Tweets I will follow.  One of those persons is Joshua Hood.  Check out his blog. I think you’ll like it.

So, that’s where I’ve been, and it was great, but it’s also good to be back.  GS
