Faith In The Face of Uncertainty

the pathIf you’ve followed this blog, you probably know my wife and I are in the process of a move.

While planning to build our dream home in the suburbs, we felt the Lord calling us to downsize and move downtown.

The place we purchased downtown is half the size of the house we are leaving. The house we are leaving has a swimming pool, library, study and weight room. Our new place has two bedrooms and living room/kitchen.

I’d be lying if I said I haven’t wondered, as we’ve been packing, if we were doing the right thing by leaving a place we love and are comfortable with for a place and lifestyle that is for all practical purposes to us an unknown. I don’t want to make it more dramatic than it is. We are not walking into martyrdom, or risking our life for the Gospel, but we are trying to be obedient to Jesus.

When I’ve had doubts about what we are doing, I’ve prayed and felt reassured we are doing the right thing. But I also realized that if there wasn’t some uncertainty there would be no place for faith. I’m not talking about uncertainty about whether God exists; I’m talking about uncertainty about what He is calling us to do, what awaits us, and how it will all turn out. If all those things were known and certain we wouldn’t need faith, only obedience.

When Abram was called by God to leave the place he knew, the Bible say Abram “…obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going.” (Heb. 11:8). Abram left a known and certain situation for one that was uncertain.

We don’t know what awaits us downtown. We don’t know if our lives will be better or worse, whether we will regret having left our house in the suburbs. But we do know that God exists and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him (Heb. 11:6), and we are confident we are doing that. GS
