A View From Anywhere

As I write this, I’m sitting at a terrace table in a jazz bar & restaurant in downtown Houston, Texas enjoying a fabulous meal, great music and the view you see in the picture.

We had an attorney function in the lounge here tonight and when we finished I stayed for dinner and to do some blogging.

I tapped into the restaurant’s wifi, took the pic you see and uploaded it to my blog and before I leave the restaurant I will have posted this blog.

So, what does all this have to do with the kingdom of God? Well, as I was sitting here contemplating the advances in technology that allow me to do what I described in the previous paragraph–something unimaginable 25 years ago–it occurred to me that while the world has changed so much in the last 25 years, people have not changed at all.

People are no different than they were 25 years ago or 2500 years ago. They are insecure, hungry for acceptance and desperate for meaning. If I could see inside the hearts of the people I’m looking at down below at the bar, they would look no different than the hearts of the people to whom Jesus spoke in the first century or the hearts of the people you saw today. My view is really a view from anywhere and it never changes.

We can get so caught up in evangelism strategies, understanding the culture and refining our testimony that we can forget that ultimately we are speaking to hearts that haven’t changed since the Fall of Man. They are not complicated or difficult to understand, and while the people are incredibly diverse in almost every other way, at their core, at the place of their most basic need, they are remarkably similar.

Realizing that makes evangelism seem a lot easier. GS
