Reflection On The Election

Well, the election is over.

The sun came up Wednesday morning.

The world did not end.

Some Christians are elated; others are disappointed.

However, although the President of the United States is the most powerful man in the world politically, who he is and what he does in the next four years, good or bad, will likely not be as important as what Christians can do to advance the Kingdom.

There are, however, some clear winners and losers in this election besides the candidates. Continue reading “Reflection On The Election”

When You Watch The Election Results Tonight

The Presidential race is shaping up to be one of the closest in history.

Watching the election results tonight should be very exciting.

I fear though that for many Christians, regardless of whether they are Obama or Romney supporters, it will be more excruciating than exciting. They believe so much rides on this election they can’t even consider what might happen if the other candidate wins.

If that is you, I would like to offer some thoughts to pull you back off the ledge and perhaps bring you to a place of blissful indifference where you can watch the election results tonight like a good college football game, pulling for your team to win but knowing its is not the end of the world if they lose. Why Negative Political Ads Work

If you live in one of the so-called “battleground states” during this political season you have no doubt been bombarded with negative political advertising.

I’m talking about the political advertising that tells you all the horrible things a particular candidate has done or will do if elected.

The ads usually don’t even mention the candidate paying for the advertisement, except to say he or she approved the ad.

But for the approval tag at the end you might not even know for whom to vote, only whom not to vote for.

President Obama and Governor Romney probably don’t agree on much, but they and the experts agree that negative political advertising works. Continue reading “Why Negative Political Ads Work”

My Early Voting Experience

I voted yesterday.

Voting early was a new experience for me. I always wait until election day so I can experience the excitement of the false hope promised by our secular political saviors.

I voted yesterday because I’m going to be in San Diego taking a deposition on Monday and will not return until late Tuesday afternoon.

The more I thought about voting early though the more I liked the idea. No lines. Get it done. Relax on election day and watch the drama unfold.

Unfortunately, it did not go as planned.

When I arrived the line was a serpentine mass of humanity stretching to the door. “How long is the wait,” I asked. “50 minutes,” said the volunteer at the door. I debated my options, but decided to stay. I can go through my emails, coordinate with my office and get some work done while I waited, I thought. Continue reading “My Early Voting Experience”

On Libya & Great Religions

;

In response to the murder of four U.S. diplomats by angry Muslims in Libya, Secretary of State Clinton went on record today saying Islam was a “great religion.”

I wasn’t sure exactly what she meant by that.

I wasn’t sure if she meant there were some religions that were not so great. Of course if that were true, it would mean the U.S. government was preferring some religions (the “great ones”) over others (the not-so-great ones).

So then I thought perhaps she meant all were religions were great. But of course that isn’t really worth saying. If all religions are great it doesn’t really make sense to call out one without mentioning the others.

And you know, when The Last Temptation of Christ was released, I don’t remember the U.S. government apologizing to Christians or calling Christianity a “great religion.” Maybe, I thought, the moniker “great” is reserved by the U.S. government for religions whose adherents commit murder in response to criticism of their leader. I don’t know; it’s all very confusing to me.
