Carolingian & Crusader Travel Journal: Day 1

Well, we are off on our journey.

The pic is from my seat on the plane as we prepare to depart on the second leg of our flight, this one from Newark, New Jersey to Paris.

The most eventful part of our trip thus far began after we boarded the plane on our flight to Newark and the wife turned and said to me, “Oh no, I forgot the charger for my iPad!”

I said, “Not a problem. You can use your iPhone charger.”

The wife said, “Oh no, I forgot the charger for my iPhone!”

What the wife didn’t forget was the olive juice to make her dirty martinis on the plane. She has it in a small plastic squirt bottle. If you are wondering how she got it through security, she had the foresight to ensure it was less than the 4 ounce limit imposed by the TSA.

So the wife orders vodka, and tells the flight attendant what she is going to do. After the vodka is delivered, the wife takes out the olive juice bottle and the flight attendant (who, coincidentally, used to be a bartender) says, “I’ve gotta see this.”

The wife works her magic and soon becomes one of the few passengers ever to imbibe a dirty martini on a United Airlines flight. I feel confident of the fact because the flight attendant, who called over another flight attendant to see the bottle de brine, said it was the first time in 19 years as a flight attendant she had seen someone engineer their own dirty martini on a plane.

So now you know a thing or two about the wife.

By the way, while all this was going on, I was reading the Sermon on the Mount on my iPad. I don’t know why I felt the need to mention that, but there it it, or as they say in France, “Voila.”

Until tomorrow. GS

  1. I love this!! And I simply MUST remember to bring a 4oz container of olive juice on my next flight as well!

P.S. Did the Sermon on the Mount come alive in a new way for you? 🙂
