Movie Review: The Power of the Dog

The Power of the Dog Movie Review

More gender confusion evangelism

I’m not sure why I picked this movie to review: The Power of the Dog. Maybe it’s because I’m perplexed.

I fully expected more Hollywood gender confusion evangelism. I was prepared to be rebuked for holding the same views civilized people have held for thousands of years about gender identity and sexuality.

But the movie was nominated for an Oscar for Best Picture. I thought that would mean, at a minimum, that it was more entertaining than most other movies.

Is there a story here?

However, I watched for two hours trying to figure out what I wasn’t understanding and where the movie was headed. I kept hoping something would happen to convince me the makers of this movie didn’t get so caught up in making sure I got the message that they forgot a movie is supposed to be a form of entertainment.

It can’t remember how many times The Wife and I said during the course of the movie, “This is so boring,” and “Can you believe this was nominated for best picture?”

I did watch the movie to the end, only because God has hard-wired me with a dogged determination. We can thank God that He gave me such determination, so you don’t have to waste your time watching this movie. And we can thank God that at the 2022 Oscars, the best movie, CODA, did win the Best Picture Award instead of The Power of the Dog.

A movie should be more than a message

The ending of the The Power of the Dog, which I won’t review and spoil here, was interesting. It made the previous two hours of the movie make sense, but not in the sense that the movie, The Sixth Sense, made sense. The twist at the end was the cherry on top of a good bowl of ice cream. The Power of the Dog included no ice cream, and the cherry was not worth the wait.

A movie shouldn’t be entertaining only in retrospect. A movie shouldn’t become an endurance contest to see who can endure boredom the longest without pulling the rip cord. It’s much better to entertain for two hours while conveying the message rather than saving the only interesting part of the movie for the end.

You may be thinking, “But you haven’t told us about the narrative, the story.” Exactly. Your guess is as good as mine. I just know it was boring.

Uninsightful message

Oh, and if you watch The Power of the Dog: in case you miss it, the themes of this movie are (i) toxic masculinity is bad; (ii) people aren’t always what they appear to be; and (iii) effeminate men can be strong, and masculine men can be closet homosexuals.

That is what I waited in rapt boredom for two hours to find out. I would rather have been told that at the start of the movie, so I could have switched over to the closing ceremonies of the Olympics.

Save your money. GS
