A Christian’s Response to the 2024 Presidential Election

Well, the people have spoken, and we now know who our president will be come January. We will have to wait to find out whether Donald Trump’s election to a second term is God’s sovereign blessing, judgment, or something else.

There are, however, a couple of things that are clear.

While the Democrats and Republicans differ on which social and political issues are more important to each, money is most important to both. The evidence is strong that those Democrats and Independents who voted for Donald Trump did so because of the economy.

Jesus was obviously right–He’s always right by the way–when He said where one’s treasure is, there his heart will be also. That applies equally to one’s vote when that treasure is money.

DEI, so-called reproductive freedom, and giving the LGBTQers their next letter all sound lofty to the Left until it is pitted against the almighty dollar. While pandering to every special interest group may be good for cobbling together a constituency, it loses its luster when it comes time to pay the bills.

Republicans didn’t have to make the hard choice between their policies and their pocket book, but that doesn’t mean they can claim the moral high ground, particularly those who claim to be Christians and whose choice was one of conscience. Do I vote for a porn-star chasing, election denying, insurrection instigating, convicted felon who promises to support my values or do I abstain? Back in the nineties Evangelicals arrived at a different decision when the candidate was a philandering former governor from Arkansas. Now Evangelicals are quick to remind us nobody is perfect.

My point here is if you are in the group that pulled the lever (metaphorically speaking) for Donald Trump, rather than celebrating the results of having been presented this undesirable dilemma, I encourage you to pray for our leaders. See 2 Tim 2:1-2. We could be entering the best of times or the worst of times, and it is by no means clear which it will be.

What is crystal clear is that no man, certainly not one who does not bow to King Jesus, is the answer. Only King Jesus is the answer. GS
