Patriotism In Perspective

It is the 4th of July, a time when American patriotism is front and center, and rightly so.

However, I’m concerned that during the other 364 days of the year patriotism has become too cherished by American Christians.

Much has been written about the dangers of an American civil religion, and on the balance I agree, but that is not where I’m headed here. I’m more interested in the impulse than the outcome.

I’m not suggesting Christians shouldn’t love their country, but I do think the patriotism exhibited in the modern American church is born out of a political impulse rather than a Kingdom one.  Patriotism (and nationalism) are encouraged by governments because they are necessary to the preservation of the state.  They are necessary because if your government goes to war it needs you to be willing to fight, and if necessary, die for it. Kevorkian Dead at 83

Dr. Death, also known as Jack Kevorkian, died Friday of a kidney related illness. The good doctor is reported to have successfully killed 130 of his patients between 1990 and 1999.

10 Greatest Lawyer Movies

Ok, this doesn’t really have anything to do with the kingdom of God. Well, maybe it does. The Bible says the kingdom of God is established on justice. (Isaiah 9:7).

The wife and I watched The Verdict tonight and I got all worked up about great lawyer movies. So here are the ten greatest lawyer movies of all time, brought to you by your trial lawyer turned blogger:

1. To Kill A Mockingbird. A lawyer who stands against a racist majority for righteousness and justice. The best of movie of them all.

2. 12 Angry Men. This movies captures the idealism about juries that makes me proud I’m a trial lawyer. There is nothing that compares to the collective intelligence of twelve jurors. This movies proves it.
